Kinda running outta titles here, just used the one word that I like and often use. I’m happy. One month here in the new place and I can say that I’m getting used to it quite well. It’s just a matter of time when I get back to my everyday development mood and start learning fun stuff off the internet.

Apart from the office timings, I’ve been concentrating upon keeping myself entertained just so that I could get along with this new little space of mine and keep the boredom and loneliness away from myself. Entertaining yourself is not all that hard here if you have a good Internet connection and Netflix Instant Streaming Disk. So far I completed watching Dexter: Season 1, Heroes: Season 1-3 (running season 4), cought up on a couple of Hindi movies online that I could not watch back home, got a blu-ray for “9”, an awesome animation. OH the fun !

I could not help but notice a tiny sting of a feeling that I am missing “some” fun that I totally like, but am not getting so far over here. For one, I have zero access to kitten furriness here. So, no instant happy mix. Second, I still cant get myself in front of a computer, mashing away the keyboard to learn something new, try something different and enjoy that difference !

For the time being, I’m gonna allow the entertainment continue. After 4th season of Heroes, I’ll move onto the Legend of Seeker. Dexter season II after that. Till who knows when.

one thing I’d like to quote here and is worth repeating.

“cats are soft, meow meow”

It feels good, really good to spend a day with some fun stuff in hand… and even more when you end it with the stuff done to your expectations. I wanted to set-up SVN over Apache2.2 and configure Mantis bug tracking system to send mail from windows using gmail.

started in the morning, faced problems in the afternoon, reached internet, problems gone by evening

if you are planning any of the above thingies, here are some links :

try these, if mantis mail doesnt work
http://www.mantisbt.org/bugs/view.php?id=8369

for apache and SVN,
BEFORE YOU START, read the Subversion Documentation… saves a lot of time
check your apache version and make sure you have valid svn and authz-svn modules for your version of Apache.
SVN win32 binaries for apache2.2 can be found here

with these modules, and documented steps, all should work well

that’s about it for now, these two links…
i’m just glad to break the blog silence with a non-nagging and self-complaining post [:)]

adios

Got a mail from Yahoo few days ago regarding Yahoo Briefcase closure. They said they’re closing down the Yahoo Briefcase service so I should get a backup of all my files which are still stored on Yahoo Briefcase before 30th of March, 2009.

I still have files on yahoo briefcase… very very valuable, but only to me… I am not talking about the contents of the file… yes, the files did cost me a lot, but I am not talking about that either. This is a different kind of value, which all of us appreciate. The value which is directly related to the object, the person and the time.. want examples ??? of course… Remember your old jeans? Remember your photos back from school days?? VALUABLE indeed ……

Sweet old memories I have in those uploaded bytes. The days of Gaming, Days of Age of Empires, Half-Life, Diablo II and Counter Strike… The days of my so called college, which I hardly ever bothered to attend… The days when the day used to dawn with the game and set with another… the memories of those addictive days crawl through my mind, unleashing torrents of energies, taking me into a trance, i see ….hoards of paladins raging through fields, rams attacking thick stone walls, Siege weapons hurling stones at distant enemy towers…. Somewhere deep beneath the town, we fight the legions of demons, just so we could reach to the portal which leads us to another realm…. GoGoGo… Strom the Front… Affirmative…….. Killing Spreee…. Double Kill…. Triple Kill…… …..GODLIKE!!! Oh my GOD they’re so many names… WoW, DotA, Ragnarok, Warcraft III, Renegade, Commandos , CnC Generals, Red Alert II, GTA II, GTA Vice City, Quake III Arena, Day of Defeat, Unreal Tournament … The awesomeness…..

I used to upload my savegame files over Yahoo Briefcase often… Just so that I could resume the game back home or in some other cyber cafe… I had plenty of Age of Empire custom maps, downloaded from several websites, stored in my briefcase, so that we wont need to find them again… Very addictive years they were… nothing else really mattered.. bunking college for days, spending those hours in cyber cafes playing multiplayer games with other kids, doing exactly the same with their colleges and their time was all that we used to do. Their real names never mattered, we hardly knew any real names of our fellow gamers… only nicknames like Nightmare, Casino, Shadow Warrior, Samrat, Pappupager, Cracker, A1, Chilli and so on… I still stick to my nickname “JaguarNac”…. I believe it’s something like gamer’s code that you do not ask a fellow gamer his real name until he exposes it by himself… or his parents come to the cafe yelling his name for bunking the college

Fun times indeed.

Yes, its one of “those” posts again where I nag about this post being a post after a long period of time just because I could not put some time together for this tiny little blog of mine….

I expect next few weeks to consume almost two days of my time in a single day every day. It’s just that there are too many things to be done… Work Deadlines, College Diploma Examinations, College Project which is to be completed best before last week of March… The time is just running out of me… This, however, makes me feel worse, that I could not even post a little “Hello” post even on the second anniversary of this web-site …

14th Feb 2007, I officially registered JaguarNac.com and It’s up there ever since. Something that I essentially started to know and experiment more about web hosting, servers and any cool new stuff that I can get my hands on.

Through these two years, there’s only one post that actually takes the cake so far and brings visits to my site. I like that post, it’s about URL routing in PHP with Apache. Something I experimented with a while back, trying to learn MVC with PHP and how to get all the requests routed through a single file. Here’s that post : Apache, URL Routing and Aliases. Apart from this and FoxPro Notes, Google analytics says that there’s nothing much you’d want to see here…

14th February , the registration date, is not a mere coincidence … I just had nothing interesting to do on that day. yet, I celebrate this anniversary date for my web site by throwing a nice little party to my friends as if it’s my own birthday. I don’t know why I do that or what comes on JaguarNac.com till next Feb 14, but till then… Have fun

For more than a month now, I’ve been teaching PHP to a bunch of TYBSC students at an institute near Deccan. Mostly on weekends or otherwise in non-office hours, I tried my best to deliver the syllabus-limited knowledge of PHP to these students. Today, the adventure finally concluded with the University Syllabus at PEAR DB packages. Being my very first attempt at teaching, i might have missed some things, might have confused my students along with myself a few times, but overall, the experience was really good. I did enjoy freshening-up and delivering lectures about php.

Right now, however, I’m trying to imagine how it’d feel from a student’s perspective if you are sitting on class benches, listening to a teacher and suddenly his cellphone ringtone starts playing Mario Bros theme . or when your baltimora-tarzan boy ringtone goes off in the middle of a session, and your teacher says “actually, that’s a nice song”

Saturday, Nov. 29, filled with young, enthusiastic minds, 7th floor of SICSR, Model Colony was “Live” indeed. Gathered on the occasion of BarCampPune 5, sharing the free and open knowledge amongst the interested peers and I indeed was happy to be one of them …

“Security” is always a major topic of discussions in camps like these (based on the 2 I attended so far ). It’s never enough to stress the importance of “Security” in whatever that relates to IT. May it be the Server side of a web application, client side JavaScripts or Wireless Networks. Problems exist around every step, some of them, harmful beyond imagination… However, dim lights over the horizon are getting brighter. Slowly, yet, definitely security awareness has started growing in the community. Many heads are coming together and trying to focus people’s attention towards these serious issues.

Rohit Srivastwa presented a very interesting session on Wireless Security. He mentioned clubHack’s recent wardriving venture conducted with Pune Police and stated the “Present situation of Wireless Security in Pune“. “Security mechanisms chat can be configured with most modern wireless routers are strong enough even to keep off ’strangers’ from using your internet” he stated while illustrating various security options available with modern devices and their comparative strength. Further interesting part from the session were the risks involved while connecting to unprotected wireless networks just to get “Free Internet Access”…

in “Getting started with PHP Frameworks” few basics about PHP Frameworks were discussed. It seemed like a whole lot of JAVA community was interested in this particular session. Session pointed out four major PHP frameworks : Zend Framework, CodeIgniter, CakePHP and Synergy. The session however, did not compare these frameworks nor did it emphasized on one particular. Amit Singh simply showed what one should consider while choosing a framework and how can one get acquainted with the framework of choice.

Just before lunch, Nulls introduced themselves to the community. Null is a “Security” oriented community aimed to define security for netizens and to explore the various perspectives to “security”. make your browser fetch null.co.in to know more or to join the Yahoo! group.

In post-lunch session, Rohan Dighe, Founder CEO of Social Web Factory delivered a great talk on Google Analytics. To my surprise, this was not about what Google Analytics is but was more about how can one use Google Analytics in AJAX applications to track even the non-pageview user interactions. I’ve been using Google Analytics for almost a year now and I did not know at all that I can trigger google analytics code to get necessary stats logged. It was also nice to hear Anthony’s view on which interactions to log on Google Analytics and which to let go.

There were other non IT topics on the agenda as well. Pune Traffic, Knowledge Representation in Sanskrit etc… I however had to leave early and could not attend further fun things like the . To summarize, it was a Saturday Well Spent . Looking forward for another of such interesting Saturday soon …

Winter has started to kick in. Mornings are soothing cold now, warm afternoons carrying mouth watering breezes of Diwali Goodies , Diwali lanterns and garlands decorating the evenings, Fun is flowing in the air !!! I finally find myself “cured” off those scary post-exam syptoms which had crippled my enthusiasm over the past week.

I’m happy indeed, I’ll finally get the time I needed to get my new PC running. I can now play Team Fortress 2 without any visual lag, Complete Half-Life 2, look into the OpenSocial things again, do some Adobe Air stuff and what not. Maybe a post or two on the Marathi blog that i started and left abandoned…

Diwali is a great festival. A festival of Light, Prosperity and the usual yet different celebration of the victory of Good against Evil. Friends, relatives and all the good food shared with them makes the days of Diwali even more energetic.

With all those energies, I wish you all a Very Very Happy, Prosperous and Peaceful Diwali. Enjoy the days, the food, the fireworks and the games !!!!

!!! Happy Diwali !!!

Exams werent as “happy” as expected. Yet, enjoyed the weekend after exams just the same. I probably need to be a bit more serious & less lazy for November exams.

I’ve been playing a few games over past few days. Some really nice games. I feel like being myself again

It’s been a few years since Half-Life 2 was in play. I am a total fan of Half-Life 1 and many other nice mods that came along with it, including Counter Strike. The HL2 did meet all my expectations am happy killing zombies and headcrabs. This time, I even get to smash some robots ^_^.

Portal is one amazing game that comes with “The Orange Box”, second is “Team Fortress 2″. This dude is multiplayer only. I can’t even explain the experience on last Sunday when I played a multi-player team FPS after almost a year.

Lastly, we have “Spores” on the map. Spore comes from “Maxis” who are the creators of a one-of-its-kind game “The Sims” . Spore offers a mix of several gameplays. You start off as a single cell, eat plants or other cells to grow, eventually you gain some parts that can be attached to this tiny cell of yours in the process of eveolution and you soon end up with your very own creature.

Eventually, the creature gets smarter and smarter, establishes tribes, fight wars, make alliances and end up being a civilization who fights more wars, makes more friends and ultimately, goes to explore the outer space…

something different !!
