I was bugged by this weird battery charging problem with my HP Pavilion Laptop for a past months. I started to notice this a few months back, when the power meter in the system tray did not show any movement whatsoever, even when plugged in and the battery was not 100% charged. In the earlier days of this problem, battery charging process used to get stuck somewhere around 85-90%. Rollover bubble on Vista’s Power Meter System Tray Icon used to say Plugged In, Not Charging…
A few days later, this percentage dropped further below to around 45-50%. Battery would simply refuse to start charging beyond that.
At this point, I started looking around net for some serious solutions for this problem and started trying them out.
Most of the results pointed to potential battery/charger problems, some suggested that it may be the problem with sockets or connectors. I even tried the trick of putting the battery in deep freez for some time, to cool it off. Though the freeze trick did some good, it still didnt allow my battery to charge all 100%
So for another month or so, I stuck with battery that would charge around anywhere between 50-70%. disconnecting the charger and plugging it back in used to give a charge of another percent or so, but even that trick didn’t always work and seemed to be very stupid thing to do repeatedly :p I kept going on with it till finally, a few days ago, the battery charging stopped around 24%. Which is when I decided to take my precious lappy to the people from whom I bought it.
The guys suggested me to try the following, before going further with a new battery and/or charger.

the process:

Start the laptop, enter the bios settings.

Put the plug in, start charging the laptop, until the “charging” indicator goes off.

once that goes off, disconnect the laptop from the charger and let it drain itself off completely.

once it’s drained, put the charger pin back in and start the machine

again, enter bios settings and wait

wait till the charging indicator led goes off again.

repeat this charge-discharge process a couple of times more if you wish

then restart and try booting into windows, see if the battery is fully charged or not. (it not, i guess, repeat the process , or go back to the lappy people….. this worked fine for me at the first time )

I also tried draining it down to around 87% and charging it back to 100% with success.
I’m happy with the result, thus, thought I should post it online
I’ll wait for a couple of days more and add a comment stating whether the problem reappears or not.

First few days of this year 2009 weren’t particularly “Happy” for me so far… Last two weeks were continuously draining energy and happiness out of my tiny little coughing body

I need to put a break to this… Get past this insane inactive period and put myself to a new jumpstart. I don’t want to run through all those things that happened in past two weeks. Some of them were bad, some of them were scared me to my roots while come events caused me to lose my usual cool and take some not-so-frequent-thing-for-me often known as “tension”..

nuff said, I need to be myself again…

Here’s first post of the year, aimed to give myself a good restart.
hope it works…

Saturday, Nov. 29, filled with young, enthusiastic minds, 7th floor of SICSR, Model Colony was “Live” indeed. Gathered on the occasion of BarCampPune 5, sharing the free and open knowledge amongst the interested peers and I indeed was happy to be one of them …

“Security” is always a major topic of discussions in camps like these (based on the 2 I attended so far ). It’s never enough to stress the importance of “Security” in whatever that relates to IT. May it be the Server side of a web application, client side JavaScripts or Wireless Networks. Problems exist around every step, some of them, harmful beyond imagination… However, dim lights over the horizon are getting brighter. Slowly, yet, definitely security awareness has started growing in the community. Many heads are coming together and trying to focus people’s attention towards these serious issues.

Rohit Srivastwa presented a very interesting session on Wireless Security. He mentioned clubHack’s recent wardriving venture conducted with Pune Police and stated the “Present situation of Wireless Security in Pune“. “Security mechanisms chat can be configured with most modern wireless routers are strong enough even to keep off ’strangers’ from using your internet” he stated while illustrating various security options available with modern devices and their comparative strength. Further interesting part from the session were the risks involved while connecting to unprotected wireless networks just to get “Free Internet Access”…

in “Getting started with PHP Frameworks” few basics about PHP Frameworks were discussed. It seemed like a whole lot of JAVA community was interested in this particular session. Session pointed out four major PHP frameworks : Zend Framework, CodeIgniter, CakePHP and Synergy. The session however, did not compare these frameworks nor did it emphasized on one particular. Amit Singh simply showed what one should consider while choosing a framework and how can one get acquainted with the framework of choice.

Just before lunch, Nulls introduced themselves to the community. Null is a “Security” oriented community aimed to define security for netizens and to explore the various perspectives to “security”. make your browser fetch null.co.in to know more or to join the Yahoo! group.

In post-lunch session, Rohan Dighe, Founder CEO of Social Web Factory delivered a great talk on Google Analytics. To my surprise, this was not about what Google Analytics is but was more about how can one use Google Analytics in AJAX applications to track even the non-pageview user interactions. I’ve been using Google Analytics for almost a year now and I did not know at all that I can trigger google analytics code to get necessary stats logged. It was also nice to hear Anthony’s view on which interactions to log on Google Analytics and which to let go.

There were other non IT topics on the agenda as well. Pune Traffic, Knowledge Representation in Sanskrit etc… I however had to leave early and could not attend further fun things like the . To summarize, it was a Saturday Well Spent . Looking forward for another of such interesting Saturday soon …

This little vacation is proving to be happy indeed. Being rewarded with four consecutive holidays after weekend, I finally feel to have achieved the reboot that I was craving since long.
Last four days were full of good ol’ gaming experience with amazing games like Half-Life 2, team fortress 2, virtual villagers, portal, sims, spore and last but not least, the Age of Empires : The Conquerors. I had my cousin and a friend over my place for a few games of AoE multiplayer on Sunday. It’s still as good as it used to be. also went to see Roadside Romio today. Nice little movie.

As of now, I do not have any plans for remaining two days of this amazing vacations. Will keep this place posted for anything exciting. Latorz!!!

Mornings are soothing cold now, warm afternoons carrying mouth watering breezes of Diwali Goodies , Diwali lanterns and garlands decorating the evenings, Fun is flowing in the air !!! I finally find myself “cured” off those scary post-exam syptoms which had crippled my enthusiasm over the past week.

I’m happy indeed, I’ll finally get the time I needed to get my new PC running. I can now play Team Fortress 2 without any visual lag, Complete Half-Life 2, look into the OpenSocial things again, do some Adobe Air stuff and what not. Maybe a post or two on the Marathi blog that i started and left abandoned…

Diwali is a great festival. A festival of Light, Prosperity and the usual yet different celebration of the victory of Good against Evil. Friends, relatives and all the good food shared with them makes the days of Diwali even more energetic.

With all those energies, I wish you all a Very Very Happy, Prosperous and Peaceful Diwali. Enjoy the days, the food, the fireworks and the games !!!!

!!! Happy Diwali !!!

I’ve been playing a few games over past few days. Some really nice games. I feel like being myself again

It’s been a few years since Half-Life 2 was in play. I am a total fan of Half-Life 1 and many other nice mods that came along with it, including Counter Strike. The HL2 did meet all my expectations am happy killing zombies and headcrabs. This time, I even get to smash some robots ^_^.

Portal is one amazing game that comes with “The Orange Box”, second is “Team Fortress 2″. This dude is multiplayer only. I can’t even explain the experience on last Sunday when I played a multi-player team FPS after almost a year.

Lastly, we have “Spores” on the map. Spore comes from “Maxis” who are the creators of a one-of-its-kind game “The Sims” . Spore offers a mix of several gameplays. You start off as a single cell, eat plants or other cells to grow, eventually you gain some parts that can be attached to this tiny cell of yours in the process of eveolution and you soon end up with your very own creature.

Eventually, the creature gets smarter and smarter, establishes tribes, fight wars, make alliances and end up being a civilization who fights more wars, makes more friends and ultimately, goes to explore the outer space…

something different !!

Totally inspired by PHPCamp , Pune and a dedicated Sunday, I was able to get this nice thing running. Guess what !!! I had JUST the right domain name for it, already in my pocketÂ

As of now, I plan to use it not as a social networking portal but more as a development platform for applications. Something tells me there’s lot more to be done with this portal. Do it I shall !!! just wait for Sundays

Anyone interested, do register ! friendly apps also welcome

Overall, the thing might be little (or way too much) slow, but I won’t complain. Got my Sunday’s worth and Happiness Quota for entire next week. !!!

have funn !!

I had sudden urge of being a good guy this afternoon. I was with my cousin, on a quest to get a helmet for him. On our way back, we stopped by an ATM where we found a Driving License lying on the ground. Understanding the importance of the document and present situation of slightly more alert traffic cops during Ganpati Festival, we decided to find the person and return him the license. Address was mentioned well on the document pointing to a location not far away from the ATM where we found the thing lying around.

Thanks to the help from local pedestrians, we were able to locate the building without much confusion. We delivered the license safely into the hands of the actual license holder and were requested to have a seat and some coffee. I believe it’s believed to be odd to just sit there and say nothing whatsoever. So, I don’t remember who, but someone started a formal conversation. The usual what you do, where do you live things, but very soon, the things turned towards my interests.

Interestingly, brother of the licence holder was head of a training program in one of Pune’s finest Software Training Institutes. We were there for like 15 minutes, but I was able to get a few of my questions answered through this nice person here.

I am in a continuous search for an Institute which matches my expectation about HTML/CSS and JavaScript training. So far, I am quite disappointed with whatever I’ve came to know about various renouned ‘web designing’ training institutes in Pune. I always happy to meet anyone who’s skilled in CSS and JavaScript. The quest is still not over, however, I can now see this guy as a possible point which could lead me to bright HTML, CSS and JavaScript resources in future. We also had some discussions about various courses offered by the Institute and various placement options provided by the Institute to their candidates.

Finally, I asked him a question which was bothering me for almost an year now. Software Testing Courses and the huge number of students/candidates opting for that course always surprised me. I wanted to know how "good" it was, and what’s the condition for that area at present. Few of my friends had asked my opinion about Software Testing Courses and they themselves seemed confident to score some placement after course completion. Almost as if placement is included and granted as a part of the software testing course. This guy had a nice answer, which cleared some confusions off my mind. He said "It was the case from 2003 to almost till last year when people were getting placed after Software Testing Course, even the B.Com guys to that matter. However, the case is just not the same now. There’s a definite saturation in the area and people are getting tolled for that. Personal skills and technical background are now being considered at their due importance.

I am quite happy to come across this fellow all of a sudden. I hope to stay in touch with him. I could really use some help from this fellow especially when people start bumping into me asking questions about software courses and placements as if I was their career counselor.

Overall, It was good to take some time from the day and return a lost artifact back to it’s original place. I now feel happy about the deed and a bit of pride too.

P.S. I aint telling any name details.
